Venice is one of the most spectacular cities in the world. In one afternoon you can enjoy decadent excursions like Island hopping in the Venetian Lagoon, visiting classic art and architecture, and checking out top attractions like San Marco and Rialto Bridge. Unfortunately, the prices for everything from food and ferries to hotels and handbags can reflect the opulence of the city. If you’re not careful, your costs will add up so fast, you might have to swim back to the airport. But there are always cheapo secrets to saving, so there’s no need to cross Venice off your list.

Most importantly, if you can reserve an affordable hotel in a great location, half your work is done. But finding a decent room in Venice for around a couple of hundred bucks or less can be tough, especially during the high season. And since you’ve come all this way, don’t you think you deserve a few extra special perks that you might not expect from a typical budget hotel?

Not to worry Cheapos! We upped our game and came up with a list of excellent sleeping options that come with unique features like charming rooftop terraces, free breakfast in an old-school dining room and complimentary Wi-Fi to make your Venice stay a memorable one. Book a room at one of these spots, and you’ll soon find yourself gliding along the canals—with plenty of extra euros still in your pocket to spend on an Italian feast at a local gem or an extra scoop of gelato.

Looking for a 600-year old hotel located about 60 seconds from Piazza San Marco that won’t bust your budget? Book a room at this charming pension, and you’ll be starting your Venice adventure off right. Not only do you get free Wi-Fi and breakfast, but each of the 14 rooms comes with a spacious (by Venice definitions) private bathroom. Even better, ask for one of the rooms with a view of the small square outside.

It’s not in the direct center of town, but that’s the appeal. The Casa Cosmo offers a quiet respite that is still close to all of the major attractions. When you want a little fresh air, you can stroll up to the rooftop terrace for a different angle on the city. Another perk is the coffee and brioche delivered right to your door every morning by the affable owner. That’s the kind of room service we love—and can afford!

If you can navigate the maze of streets around Rialto Bridge to find this hidden gem, you are in for a true Venice treat. Inside each of the six rooms you’ll find high ceilings, historic charm (the building dates back to the 1400’s) and comfortable private bathrooms with big showers. Rooms also come with a table, chairs and—we really love this touch—wine glasses, so you can pick up a bottle from a local shop to sip at your own leisure. It’s the perfect way to end your day in Venice!

Special perk: Rooms overlooking the canal for just a little bit more

It might only be a one-star property, but with great rates and an even better location in the heart of it all, these accommodations hit the mark for a cheapo stay. Each of the 21 rooms comes with a simple (but private) bathroom, and the ancient palazzo building adds a touch of Venetian history. For a small upgrade, it’s definitely worth booking a room that overlooks the canal—views like that usually go for $1,000 not $100.

Special perk: Free breakfast each morning in the old-school restaurant downstairs

Getting to your room is half the fun at this art-themed hotel. Just walk through the century old restaurant and find the wooden staircase up to the lobby. It’s a throwback kind of hotel, but that just adds to the charm. The family that runs this hotel has a thing for art, so expect to see it everywhere you look. In the morning you can head back downstairs to enjoy breakfast in the dining room that’s–yes!–included in the rate.
