The Jacques Brel Hostel (named for the famed Belgian singer-songwriter) isn’t your average, run-down backpacker establishment, as evidenced by its charming courtyard with wooden garden furniture. Situated close to tram and subway lines, it’s a good base for budget-conscious travelers.

The 46 rooms fall a bit short of inspiring. The yellow curtains and flimsy mattresses are dated, and some of the rooms have linoleum flooring. Many, though, afford views of the lovely Art Nouveau residences that surround the hostel. All doubles and singles have adequate en suite bathrooms. Dorms have clean but dark communal bathrooms with a shower stall and a toilet, either attached or in the hallway.

What the rooms lack in character, the lobby makes up for in liveliness. The ping-pong table, free Internet stations and comfy sofas draw residents downstairs. There is also a big TV lounge and free lockers (but bring your own locks).

The included breakfast is very generous, and the communal kitchen is sparkling clean.

1.1km to city center

The two options for exiting Gare du Nord, the city’s northern train station, afford radically different first impressions. Take the Bolivar exit, and you’ll find yourself in a garden of 1960s high rises. Take the Aarschot exit, and you’re in the shady red light district, which borders the commercial thoroughfare of the Middle Eastern communities.

This neighborhood has its share of budget hotels, as well as mid-price shopping centers and cheap eateries. The highlight is the Botanic Garden, a green oasis amidst office buildings and heavy traffic. The garden also has a famous concert venue. From Gare du Nord, the Grand Place is a 20-minute walk south.
