Situated just a stone’s throw from Milan’s central train station, the Hotel Garda may blend in with the dozens of accommodation options in the area, but this three-star property is the true budget gem on the block. We loved how it mixes an old-fashioned family spirit with a completely modern style.

The Hotel Garda’s 55 rooms are lively, with painted doorways, damask-style wallpaper and red, yellow and blue color schemes. Recent renovations are evident, and while some of the furniture could be classified as bland, the Garda jazzes things up with contrasting woods and attractive artwork. Some rooms really pop with bold striped wallpaper. All rooms are outfitted with air conditioning, soundproof windows, a telephone, TV and minibar.

The private bathrooms have seen a few years of wear and tear but are definitely cared for. Some have cute blue tiles, and newer bathrooms sport pink marble.

Downstairs the Hotel Garda has a formal feel. Its polished marble floors and regal couches make it hard to believe that the friendly family who owns the place also lives on the first floor. But the staff definitely upholds the familial vibe.

Breakfast is available for a fee (about €10), while Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Note that prices surge during the Fiera furniture expo and major Milan fashion events.

Milan’s main train station is not located in the prettiest part of town, and you may spot a few (or several) unsavory characters around here. That said, the area between the station and Corso Buenos Aires is plenty safe, and it’s home to several perfectly adequate hotels—many with rock-bottom rates. You’re also, of course, well situated for getting around the city, and Corso Buenos Airesis home to some of the city’s best shopping.
