The bed and breakfast La Dimora degli Angeli is a great bet for "value" travelers who are looking to pamper themselves a bit. While prices hover around the upper edges of our EuroCheapo range, these classy digs, with their prime location just seconds from Piazza Repubblica and the Duomo, are worth the splurge.

Located on the fourth floor of an early-20th-century building (with elevator!), this 12-room B&B specializes in contemporary spa-like design with pops of bright color. Each room has its own color scheme (simple cream, relaxing lavender, cheerful hot pink...) that tints everything from the headboards to the furniture and even the duvet covers.

All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, flat-screen TV, minibar, safe and free Wi-Fi. En suite bathrooms are sleek, and feature rainfall showers and toiletries.

Complimentary breakfast is provided off-site at a café, but a dining area is available for guest use, as is a small kitchenette where complimentary coffee, tea, fresh fruit and cookies are available throughout the day.

Budget-savvy travelers looking for a little “luxe” should keep a Cheapo-eye out for low season rates and specials.

Santa Maria Novella

Across the street from the train station, the area around Piazza Santa Maria Novella is perhaps the most varied neighborhood in the city. The somewhat frantic streets leading to the station get a lot of traffic (both automobile and human), while the other side of the grassy Piazza is formed by narrow, serpentine little streets, characterful buildings and top-notch shopping.

The 'hood is bordered by the river, the train station and the shopping street Via Tornabuoni. As such, this area suffers a bit of an identity crisis. One thing is for sure: once you're here, you're no more than ten-minutes away from anything else.

Sleeping near Santa Maria Novella is a no-brainer for travelers looking for quick-and-easy access to the train station at any hour. Booking a hotel in the area's eastern edges places you basically in the center of town.
